UK LABOUR LEADER Jeremy Corbyn is decidedly more popular here than he is at home, according to a new poll.

Asked who they would prefer to see as British Prime Minister in the wake of June’s election, more than half of people said they’d like to see Conservative Theresa May return to Number 10.

But Jeremy Corbyn racked up more than two-thirds support in a straight two-way contest.

  • Theresa May: 56%
  • Jeremy Corbyn: 44%

The poll was carried out by Amarách Research on behalf of Claire Byrne Live and TheJournal.ie. 1,000 people were asked ‘Who would you prefer to see as British Prime Minister?’.

May has called a snap general election for June 8 in a bid to strengthen her majority in parliament heading into the Brexit negotiations.

In a YouGov general election voting intention poll last week, the Conservatives were on 45%, Labour on 29%, the Liberal Democrats on 10% and UKIP on 7%.

Asked who would make the best prime minister, 48% said May, 18% said Corbyn, while 33% said they were not sure.

Asked what the top general election issues were, four main themes emerged:

  • Brexit (64%)
  • Health (47%)
  • Immigration (36%)
  • The economy (35%)

Labour’s Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said last week the party accepted that the UK was leaving the European Union, but that it would scrap May’s Brexit plan if elected and unilaterally guarantee the rights of EU residents.
