Musical theatre lead role in Annie won with a warm-up

A talented songstress who secured the lead role in the musical Annie won the part while going through her warm-up.

Blenheim girl Charlotte McLean, 12, was delighted to receive a call-back for the coveted part in the Blenheim Musical Theatre production.

She scooped the role while singing what she believed was simply a warm-up, only to later discover it was the final audition.

The Year 8 pupil will be taking to the stage alongside Ella Kernick-Harvey, of Feilding, to share the main Annie role.

Charlotte says this is her first lead part though she has been involved with theatre since she was about 8-years-old.

“I’ve been singing ever since I can remember and love the old movie of Annie. I went along to the audition and sang It’s a Hard Knock Life but didn’t realise it was actually the main audition, I thought it was a warm-up.

“On the day I found out I had the part I had just been on the phone and when it rang again I thought it was mum calling but they said I had got the part, it was so exciting.

“I’m a bit nervous as it’s the lead role but I know when I get up on stage I will be fine.”

The St Mary’s school pupil has to practice five times a week in the run-up to the May performance.

Charlotte and Ella, who saw off competition from about 80 other hopefuls, will split the part so neither girl gets too tired by the 11 performances.

The pair have also had to learn a lot of lines for the production.

“It’s been really busy but great fun. I can’t wait. I’m just making sure I get plenty of rest and eat well before the show starts so I don’t get sick.

“I can’t wait,” she says.

Annie will take place at the ASB Theatre Marlborough from May 11-20.

Tickets cost $55 for adults, $45 for seniors, $30 for students and under 18s, while a family pass is $120.
